Live Ensemble Classes

Live Ensemble Details

Location: Musically Minded Academy @ St. Peter’s Church, downstairs. 6013 Lawton Avenue, Oakland, CA 94618.

Ages: 6-18 

Financial Aid is available through our “Opportunity Funds.” Students may join groups at any time with prorated tuition. 

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES:

Tuition: $655 ($660 on the installment plan). Prorated tuition is available for late enrollments. Financial Aid is available. 

Dates:

    • – Fall Semester: Saturdays, 9/10/22-12/10/22 (Students may join anytime, this is an ongoing program)
    • – No Classes: 11/21/22-11/27/22 for Fall Break
    • – Performances: Fall Recitals – 10/29/22, Winter Recitals – 12/10/22 

Times: 

    • – Ancient Airs/New Notes: 9 am-11 am, Saturdays
    • – Basic, Blues and Beyond: 11 am-1 pm, Saturdays

VOCAL ENSEMBLES:

Ancient Airs/New Notes (Sat. 9 AM - 11 AM)

Ancient Airs: An exploratory chamber music class is for instrumentalists who are newer to their instruments. The focus is on play-based music learning, improvisation, ornamentation, and other explorations of creativity. Chants and dances from around the world; Baroque to folk; and beyond.

New Notes: For more experienced musicians, this chamber music curriculum reflects the transformation of the turn of the century Classic/Romantic standards into contemporary instrumental music of more recent eras, expanding the envelope of structure and some improvisational skills, from rags to riches.

    • Geared toward younger elementary students.
    • All skill levels — great for beginners.
    • No previous music staff reading is required.
  • New Notes:
    • Ideal for intermediate and advanced instrumentalists.
    • Musicians with strong music skills, including sight reading.
    • Confidence as both a leader and a follower in a musical context.
    • Strong Focus Skills Required.

    • Engaging activities familiarizing students with their instruments.
    • Introduction to teamwork and playing ensemble music.
    • Gross motor movement that channels youthful energy

    • Masterpieces of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras and beyond.
      • Strings: All positions
      • Piano: All scales and I, IV, V chords and arpeggios.
      • Winds/Brass: Strong grasp of transposition and playing over the break.

Basics, Blues and Beyond (Sat. 11 AM - 1 PM)

Cohort 1: Geared towards students with at least 1 year of musical experience. This class is rooted in the basics of jazz and blues with additional exploration of other genres. This is an excellent experience for those new to small ensemble playing.

Cohort 2: For students with 2+ years of experience. All ages are welcome but great for intermediate players. This jazz ensemble is a step beyond just the basics.

    • – Prepared to sit for an hour or more while focusing on music practice and leadership skills.
  • Cohort 2
    • – For students with 2+ years of experience.
    • – All ages are welcome but great for intermediate players.
    • – Music staff reading skills are required.
    • – Confidence as both a leader and a follower in a musical context.
    • – Strong focus skills.

Music Focus:

Cohort 1

    • – Learning up to 4 Major scales, triads, and blues scales.
    • – Reading and Ear training.
    • – Jazz Standards from the “Real Easy Book” 

Cohort 2

    • Learning all 12 major scales and modes, Blues scales, and more.
    • Ear training and sight reading.
    • More standards and creating original music as a class

Technique/Classroom Skills:

Cohort 1:

    • Winds/Brass: Strong grasp of transposition and playing over the break.

Very Vocal Ensemble (Thur. 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM)

This vocal/choral class introduces group singing using songs from around the world and throughout time—from chants and canons to folk songs and spirituals. We will also explore Orff/Kodaly style percussion/instruments as well as songwriting and improvisation. In this class, students will learn age-appropriate healthy vocal techniques in a fun atmosphere with an emphasis on body movement, hand gestures, some sign language, and drama/play. The class includes two Academy Student Event “show and tell” performances with piano and instrumental collaboration that is open to friends and family.

No auditions are required. All skill levels are welcome.

Masks, social distancing, and self-quarantining if sick or exposed to COVID-19 will be strongly encouraged. We will also promote a healthy environment with adequate ventilation and other measures.

COVID-19 vaccination is requested.

$50 discount is offered to those who enroll in private lessons via the Academy Program.

We will also suggest some music purchases of less than $50.

Financial Aid/ Accessibility

Limited financial aid is available for these classes. We are especially interested in increasing opportunities for underserved youth. Please contact us and let us know your circumstances and how much you can afford for the monthly installments. We will do what we can to accommodate your needs. 

Our current location does not have ADA access. Construction is starting soon to remedy that. In the meantime, please let us know if you would like to see our facility and see if we may accommodate your needs with special plans in the meantime.
